How long should you spend in the gym?

Before we get into it, this would depend on your own personal goal and how soon your l would like to achieve it.

3 days a week training in the gym compared to 6 days a week in the gym, the second option will probably see results sooner.

But when it comes to each session in the gym is there a “magic” amount of time? Should you just spent 45 minutes and get in and out?

For me I aim for around anhour, but I go at off peak hours which means less people and less time waiting around for squat racks, weights and machines… sometimes I’ll have to wait a few minutes for something to be available, not a big deal.

Sometimes 60 minutes turns into 70, I still get my program done.

And that is what I think the answer should be.

If you are following a gym program and following it correctly, like adding weigh to your reps and getting stronger over the weeks/months, then when you finished the plan, then that’s the amount of time you should spend.

My plan is 5 exercises, 8 reps, 6 sets and 90 seconds rest. I also have a 2 mins warm up on the rower and a stretch at the end, I can get this done is around an hour with no wasting time on my phone/social media.

If you are doing an amrap or emom then you can just set a time for this and set up your equipment, this is what I would do in the past and my workouts were 20–30 minutes and I’d be in and out of the gym in less that 40 minutes.

Your goal should be to get the workout done, not half a workout, not just the exercises you like or say you’ll workout for 45 minutes and it involves 15 minutes of thumb scrolling and tapping a screen twice.

Get a plan and get it done, that’s how long you should spend in the gym.
